Core 5 Research
Our Core 5 Research Programme commenced in 2008/9 and will finish by 2012.
It comprises three Work Areas:
"Flexible Networks"
The challenge of designing networks in a completely new way is the objective of this programme, a way which enables them to evolve to accommodate as yet unknown user requirements & socio-economic drivers. The programme addresses the cycle of service initiation, construction, delivery and verification - and the design methodologies needed to support this, exploring virtualisation, network coding and verification in the self-x environment.

"Green Radio"
Since the term Green Radio was first coined by Mobile VCE's Visions Group in early 2007, it has become widely used in the industry. The goal of this research is to secure 100x reduction in energy requirements for delivery of high data rate services, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and Opex costs whilst enabling new services. It is investigating both architectural and individual technological approaches.

"User Interaction"
"User Interactions for Breakthrough Services" is the goal of this new programme, addressing the ways in which the User interacts with his portable and mobile devices (and other devices in his physical and logical environment ie not just mobile phones) in order to enable new types of personalised and highly contextualised services.

"Instant Knowledge"
"Instant Knowledge: A Secure Autonomous Business Collaboration Service" (part of the Core 4 programme, but running alongside Core 5) exploits the rapidly advancing capabilities of personal devices - Smartphones, Netbooks and MIDs - to enable operators to deliver a new genre of high-value service to their corporate customers, by harnessing the information within and flowing through such devices. These new services will enable new ways of working, deliver operational efficiencies to the enterprise, and new revenues to operators.
