Objectives

An exploratory meeting to allow interested industrial members to assess the scope and relevance of the proposed new Multihop Propagation Elective Research Programme to their organisations, and to learn more about the mechanism for participating and funding this work, should they wish to be involved.

One objective of the programme is to support the participating companies' ongoing activities within IEEE802.16j, providing them with a better and early understanding of the relevant channel behaviour.

  Origins of the Proposed Programme & Proposed Technical Objectives
The proposal for this elective has emerged from discussions between Nortel and other industrial members who share an interest in the IEEE802.16j (relay working group) activity. There exists a recognised need for proper understanding of the radio channel for relaying applications - where such relays may be fixed or mobile - within the conventional cellular environment. Dean Kitchener will outline the content of these discussions and the preliminary requirements identiufied.

  Proposed Technical Approach and Programme
Prof Mark Beach will decribe the proposed technical approach and programme which has been developed in consultation with Nortel and other industriual players and has been documented in the draft Programme Description Document.

  Open Forum Debate on Requirements & Programme
Whilst the material previously presented forms a solid basis, the purpose of this exploratory meeting is to allow the wider industy members of Mobile VCE who may wish to participate in this elective to indicate their interests and to help shape the programme. This slot in the agenda is thus intended to allow free-ranging debate, with a view to refining the Programme Description Document prior to issuing a formal "Invitation to Participate" letter to all Mobile VCE Industrial Members.

  Moving to Concensus: Programme Description & Industry Involvement
Based on the earlier presentations and discussion, at this point in the programme a concensus will be developed on the content of the updated Programme Description Document and an indication sought of likely industry involvement, and hence cost-share.

The activities and timescales for the next steps will be outlined. These will include:
* Preparation & Issue of the Revised Programme Description Document and Invitation to Participate letter
* Response Date
