Abstract Minimizing handover latency has been the subject of intense research in the field of mobility management. Numerous micro-mobility solutions were proposed out of which Mobility Agent based solutions such as Hierarchical Mobile and Network Localized Mobility Management have risen in prominence due to their iter-operability with native IP networks amongst other benefits. Despite the progress in optimizing handover latency, not much focus was given to other aspects of the Mobility Agent solutions such as Mobility Agent location and its related network management issues. We aim to taxonomize various aspects of network optimization involving Mobility Agent based micromobility. Subsequently, we formulate the handover overhead and routing costs in a network and perform numerical investigations to obtain the effect of MA location on these costs. The investigations show that the MA location has a considerable effect on these costs and to ensure optimal performance of the the network and the micro-mobility solution requires a combined framework in finding the optimal configuration of MA and related network management issues.
